Manny Pacquiao is an amazing fighter who has faced down dozens of opponents to become pretty muchthe best around. So when the man with no fear was asked about his opinion on gay marriage, he gave an honest answer:
"God's words first ... obey God's law first before considering the laws of man," Pacquiao told the (National Conservative) Examiner. "God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married. It should not be of the same sex, so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah."
This is an opinion shared with the majority of people in America, even in my home state of California. But, as you can imagine, liberal/gay activists were enraged that anyone who dare disagree agree with them state their opinion openly. Liberal website Think Progress has joined forces with the Courage Campaign to have Nike to drop its sponsorship of the Pac Man. There, the “Drop Manny” crusade isn’t even based on his quote- it’s based on a quote from Leviticus that the author of the interview put into the piece:
"If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
Once again, Pacquiao never said this; it was a quote added by the author; however, this is the focal point of their argument to have Nike drop Pacquiao. Let's call this as it is: an attempt to silence another voice of opposition in popular culture. It is an attempt to make anyone with any influence afraid to speak his or her mind so that they can have a monopoly on speech. They have done this before with Tracy Morgan, Vince Vaughn, and others. And, unfortunately, it is bound to continue until we say "enough!".
